The Dave C. Swalm School
of Chemical Engineering

The Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering is housed in a new $18 million 95,000 square foot facility equipped with modern state of the art classrooms, teaching laboratories, and research laboratories. The student lounge/study area and several classroom areas are equipped with computer ports and power outlets to facilitate laptop computers. The building also has wireless Internet connection.

Research

The School's research efforts consistently bring in excess of $2 million in research funding to MSU. The research areas that receive funding include environmental, energy related, materials science, biomedical, biochemical, and nanotechnology. Support for funding is received from various government agencies such as the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and the Federal Aviation Administration. Other funding is obtained from private industry.

Students

The Swalm School of Chemical Engineering provides a broad-based educational experience that prepares graduates for careers in chemical engineering, related industries, and postgraduate programs in engineering, medicine, and law. MSU chemical engineering graduates are nationally recognized for their technical knowledge, work ethic, and "hands-on" approach to chemical engineering. Nationally prominent areas of technical excellence include environmental and biochemical engineering, materials science, transport phenomenon and thermodynamics, and energy engineering. The majority of the School's graduates participate in a "work experience" prior to graduation that includes cooperative education, summer internships, or work in a research laboratory. Student chapters of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), and the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) are active. The AIChE student chapter is recognized as one of the most outstanding student chapters in the United States.
