Safety in a Biosafety Level 2 facility
M.D.-ERL is a Biosafety Level 2 facility that specializes in handling human blood. The MSU Office of Regulatory Compliance assists our lab in complying with all federal regulations. M.D.-ERL's goal is to protect lab researchers from blood borne pathogens using every method available. This site lists the lab specific resources that M.D.-ERL's researchers rely upon.
The following training modules are required:
- Biosafety Modules describe pertinent lab requirements for Biosafety levels 1 and 2.
- Biosafety contract for the lab outlines with applicable procedures
- Review and update each semester (3 times per year)
- Exposure Control Plan describes the dangers within M.D.-ERL, the engineering controls in place, and procedures should an injury occur. Identify questions and make comments then sign and date form when complete.
- Review and update each semester (3 times per year)
- Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects training. Complete training online and print out completion page.
- Renew training every 3 years

- OSHA Bloodborne pathogen training (contact the Biosafety Officer, Dr. Patricia Cox to schedule training: 325-0620 pcox@research.msstate.edu).
- Renew training every year.
- Hazardous waste training through the Office of Regulatory Compliance (see www.orc.msstate.edu to learn about live sessions or to take the online course).
- Renew training every year.
- Conduct agreement outlining computer use policies / good Samaritan conduct in the lab.
- Renew and update each semester (3 times per year)
- Copy of hepatitis shot records.
- Provide upon initial employment
